Biopolymer Research Group

Foreword

Welcome to the Biopolymer Research Group at the Fiber and Biopolymer Research Institute, Department of Plant and Soil Science (Texas Tech University). Our research objectives are aimed at: (1) increasing the knowledge and understanding of cellulose and other biopolymers structures,(2) exploring the links between polymer structure and physical properties, (3) functionalizing surfaces such as textiles and bioplastics to impart new properties.

This is fundamental to the FBRI’s longstanding mission to add value to natural fibers produced in Texas.  Furthermore, it is an integral part of a growing collaboration with plant breeders, geneticists and biotechnologists.

PSS 5373: Biopolymers and Bioproducts

Course description: A wide range of naturally occurring polymers (biopolymers) derived from renewable resources are available for material applications.  Bioproducts are defined as products that are composed in whole or in significant part of renewable agricultural materials.  This course will be focused on the chemistry of biopolymers (Cellulose, Lignin, Hemicellulose, Starch, Chitosan) and their transformation to bio-based products (Bioethanol, Biodegradable plastics, Surfactants, etc…).  A review of the analytical techniques used to characterize biopolymers and bioproducts will be also performed.
